The Museum of the History of Medicine and Pharmacy at the Medical University of Bialystok was officially opened by professor Jacek Nikliński, Rector of the Medical University of Bialystok, in 2011. It is located in the Branicki Palace, the main seat of the University and one of the most interesting Baroque residences in Central Europe, dubbed the ‘Polish Versailles’ in the 18th century. The museum cultivates Bialystok’s heritage in medicine, originating from the city owners of the 17th century. Inside the Palace today, you will learn about the workings of the 18th century Institute of Midwifery and a German World War I field hospital. The primary role of the Museum is to protect the medical and pharmaceutical heritage developed at the border of the Crown of Poland territory and The Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The collection items date back to the 18th and 19th century, representing various fields of medicine and pharmacology. The collection includes, for example, a 1921 Siemens&Halske x-ray machine, dentist chairs used around the turn of the 19th century, gynaecology clinic furnishings of the interwar period, early 20th century surgical tools, anatomy and pathology preparations. Visitors find out more about the 60 years of history of the Medical University of Bialystok from the recollections of the school’s first students and lecturers. A visit to the museum is an interactive stroll into the past where you will enter the offices of a dentist, an eye doctor, a gynaecologist, as well as an x-ray room, a drug-making laboratory or a workroom of the anatomist of old. The exhibition layout helps visitors discover the secrets of medicine and pharmacology engaging all senses. The Museum is also a research and education centre for the University students, where they learn about the history of medicine and pharmacology. The Museum hosts educational workshops for the public. Participants learn about the work of a doctor or pharmacist and make their own souvenirs to remind them of their visit at the Museum. The Museum developed into a solid point in the cultural calendar of Bialystok and the Podlasie region. Every year it takes part in such events as: the Long Night of Museums, the European Heritage Days, the European Day of Academic Heritage, the Podlasie Science and Art Festival, Open Days at the MUB, Children’s Week, and the “Zubroffka” International Short Film Festival. There are more events promoting the medical heritage of the Podlasie region, including temporary exhibitions, book promotions, concerts, historical reconstruction events. In 2013 and 2014, the Museum received an award of “The Most Interesting Museum Event of the Year in Podlasie”, category: Publication.

FROM THE DOCTOR’S ACADEMY TO THE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY. MEDICAL HERITAGE IN BIALYSTOK
The intention behind the exhibition “From the Doctor’s Academy to the Medical University. The Bialystok Heritage of Medicine” is to promote the academic medical heritage present in Bialystok. Its opening coincided with the 70th anniversary of the Medical University of Bialystok. The oldest and at the same time the first secular higher education institution was opened in 1950, adopting modern age healing traditions (the Palace School of Midwives, Institute of Midwifery, field hospital). Among the first scientists employed at the University, there were professors from Vilnius, Krakow, Lviv and Poznan, who brought the academic tradition of their interwar universities to Bialystok. Today, the Medical University of Bialystok is a rapidly growing school, its graduates working in Poland or contributing to the leading hospitals and universities worldwide. The exhibition presents historical photographs and documents of the MUB. A special focus will be on the seat of the University – the Branicki Palace and the historical campus.
