Population (cohort) studies are aimed at describing the prevalence of diseases in a given population depending on personal characteristics and environmental conditions. An example of a cohort study is the BIAŁYSTOK PLUS project. Its task is to assess the health of the population in a given area, in this case in the city of Białystok. Thanks to the BIAŁYSTOK PLUS project, we get to know the health condition of our city's inhabitants and we can detect new factors that allow us to predict what diseases we may develop in the future. At a later stage, such knowledge can be used to prevent these diseases and improve the organization of health care in the city.
A clinical trial, on the other hand, is a scientific trial conducted in humans, the purpose of which is to discover or confirm the clinical and pharmacological effect of one or more investigational medicinal products. Clinical trials concern each new drug that is to enter the market and be approved for sale, as well as new uses for already registered drugs. Clinical trials at the Medical University of Bialystok are carried out by the newly established Clinical Trials Support Centre.
