If a student is absent for health reasons, they are required to provide a medical certificate; otherwise, a certificate issued by competent authorities will be needed.
- Four excused absences per course are allowed. Even if an absence is excused and a student receives a sick note from a physician for at least two weeks, such student will have to cover the missed practice at the last lab class; otherwise, they will not receive credit and will not be admitted to take the final exam.
- Students shall follow all the applicable health, safety and fire protection regulations, which will be communicated to them before the commencement of the course, and each student shall sign a confirmation sheet to verify that he/she has read and understood the applicable instructions. Any incident that may occur at the Department shall be reported to the course teacher immediately.
- Course description: In this course, we will study medically relevant parasites of the world. Occasionally we can also examine a parasite of little medical relevance, only for its unique or interesting life cycle. Each parasite will be studied thoroughly, to include details of taxonomic classification, host spectrum, geographic distribution, morphology, life cycle requirements, pathogenesis, control measures and public health significance. Occasionally additional information may be added that is interesting or necessary for full understanding. Laboratory will show the students the morphology and structure of individual parasites and improve the students’ proficiency with microscopes.
- Students should be prepared in terms of theoretical background for every session, based on the required textbooks. Short knowledge tests, oral or written, can be administered by the teacher at the beginning of each class.
The rules for passing the parasitology course
- Speaking or cheating during tests/exams is forbidden and lead to a failing test/exam note (0 points or grade 2 - failed). Anyone caught cheating will be reported to the Rector’s office in order to initiate disciplinary proceedings.
- Students can retake a failed test within 2 weeks. If the retake result is still negative or if the student does not retake the test, he/she will not qualify for taking the mid-term
- Two mid-term tests are scheduled during the course, covering the 2 theory areas. Grading scale: 40 max. points for a mid-term, 60% required for each to be admitted to the final exam. Students who are absent or score <60% at either mid-term will have to retake the test at the data consulted with didactic assistants.
- After a failed retake of “Parasitology”, the entire course must be done again.
- All mid-terms take place outside the lab class time (for all students), at the dates and times agreed with the representative (2 class hours will be deducted from total lab hours). In a case of an excused absence, the student retakes the test at the end of the term.
- Students who cannot attend class or mid-term for health reasons, verified with a physician’s note, will be offered an extra opportunity to make up for all the missed and excused classes and mid-terms during the last lab class.
- Students can review their test sheets/papers/ exams within seven days after the announcement of results.
- The exam is scheduled during the winter term finals period.
- The final grade will be calculated according to the following formula:
% of points for the two mid-terms * 0.4 + % exam points * 0.6 = percentage determining the final grade
Final grades:
<60% - 2
>60-70% - 3
>70-77% - 3.5
>77-85% - 4
>85-93% - 4.5
>93-100% - 5 - Students who received min. 90% at both mid-terms will not have to take the final exam and will receive grade 5.
- Students are required to report any concerns.
- Anyone who disregards the rules and regulations concerning the course or general safety matters will not be allowed or will be removed from the course without credit.
