    Prof. Edward Bańkowski is a specialist in connective tissue biochemistry and pathobiochemistry.

    In 1980-2012 he was the Head of the Department of Medical Biochemistry at MUB, where he pioneered a science school of extracellular matrix biochemistry.

     

     

    Prof. Edward Bańkowski’s main scientific achievements are:
    • Discovery of the Hageman factor absorption and activation by collagen,
    • Description of changes in collagen ability to aggregate blood platelets,
    • Discovery of blood plasma proteins containing hydroxyproline,
    • Discovery of a factor in blood platelets that stimulates collagen synthesis in fibroblast cultures in vitro - later described as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF),
    • Description of umbilical cord extracellular matrix remodelling during preeclampsia,
    • Discovery of a reservoir of growth factors in human Wharton’s jelly a .

     

    Prof. Edward Bańkowski has been awarded honorary degrees from the Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne (France) and the Medical University of Silesia, Katowice (Poland).
