The researchers from the Medical University of Bialystok (Julia Nowowiejska, Anna Baran, Anna Pryczynicz, Justyna Magdalena Hermanowicz, Beata Sieklucka, Dariusz Pawlak, Iwona Flisiak) published the article „Gasdermin B (GSDMB) in psoriatic patients - a preliminary comprehensive study on human serum, urine and skin.” in Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences.

Psoriasis is one of the most common skin diseases and represents a major challenge for modern dermatology. Despite numerous studies, the causes of its occurrence are still not fully understood. Researchers decided to find out what role Gasdermin B (GSDMB) plays in psoriasis. GSDMB is a protein of the gasdermin family that is involved in cell proliferation and migration.

GSDMB levels in serum and urine were measured by ELISA, while tissue expression of GSDMB was analysed by immunohistochemistry. The results showed that GSDMB levels in serum and urine were significantly higher in patients with psoriasis than in controls. GSDMB expression in the dermis and epidermis was significantly higher in psoriasis areas compared to healthy skin of control subjects. In addition, serum GSDMB levels had a positive correlation with patient age.

The elevated GSDMB levels suggest that this protein may play an important role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, possibly affecting cell proliferation and migration. Elevated serum GSDMB levels and reduced urinary GSDMB/creatinine ratio may be investigated as potential biomarkers of psoriasis. Future studies may also consider GSDMB as a potential therapeutic target.

The part of the study involving the assessment of serum and urinary GSDMB was funded by the National Science Center, Poland, no NCN/1/MI/22/001/1149. The part of the study involving the assessment of tissue expression of GSDMB was funded by the Medical University of Bialystok, Poland, no B.SUB.23.358.
