The Medical University of Bialystok (MUB) is a renowned, rapidly growing higher education institutions with a notable position among the academic centres in Poland. MUB enjoys unique strong recognition in research/education in Poland in the field of life sciences, with the status of a Leading National Research Centre (KNOW) in medicine/health sciences in Poland, awarded for the years 2012-2017. According to the data from the last (2013) scientific ranking by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland, the Faculty of Pharmacy with the Division of Laboratory Medicine of MUB was the highest ranked research institute in the field of life sciences with the only A+ score, while the Faculty of Medicine with the Division of Dentistry and Division of Medical Education in English ranked highest among all the faculties of medicine in Poland. In 2012, a Centre for Innovative Research was established at MUB, with the engagement of the Mossakowski Medical Research Centre, the Polish Academy of Sciences, CenStat, UHasseltand, CEMBIO, USP-CEU. The purpose of CIR is the search for new markers for early detection of lifestyle diseases. Specific project targets are biomarkers for custom treatment of such diseases. Innovative high-throughput technologies employed by the institution include genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, metabolomics and advanced medical imaging methods (hybrid PET/MRI).
The University offers a highly advanced environment for scientific research. The Centre of Experimental Medicine is a state-of-the-art facility specializing in animal laboratory operation and experimental studies on laboratory animals. It is also unique base for basic research, preclinical studies and implementation for national and international organizations, as a holder of a Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) certificate to conduct experimental research on animals in the field of toxicity studies and pharmacokinetic studies. The Euroregional Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Analysis is the first facility of its kind in Poland, offering drug and formulation control capabilities from cross-border exchange and qualitative/quantitative assessment of toxic contents in medicinal preparations, food and biological material. Collaborate with facility run by representatives of police, fire department and border guards. The Euroregional Centre of Pharmacy is a highly specialized pharmaceutical analysis unit, implementing advanced research techniques in daily work. ECP conducts research in collaboration with various national and international centres on such topics as drug discovery of synthetic and natural, drug efficiency evaluation mechanism, toxicity profile and pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic drug form technology and medical diagnostics. Centre for Clinical Research (opened in April 2015) – a new clinical research facility specialising in metabolic, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative diseases and oncology – the project was funded by the Polish Government as a part of the ”Upgrading and Development of the University Hospital in Białystok” (total budget: 506 million PLN). The University has high-throughput genomics/transcriptomics apparatus (HiSeq 4000), as well as proteomics and metabolomics equipment (Orbitrap MS) (2015), funded from the Regional Operational Programme for Podlasie Region (33 million PLN). Centre for Bioinformatics and Data Analysis (opened in November 2015) - infrastructural grant funded from the Development of Eastern Poland Operational Programme (European Regional Development Fund) (19 million PLN). Laboratory of Molecular Imaging and Technology Transfer – an SME owned by MUB, headquartered in the Białystok Science and Technology Park (BSTP), operating state-of-the-art PET-MRI hybrid apparatus for molecular imaging.
